In order to check the efficiency of heat transfer in a heat exchanger or cooler, the tubes of the heat exchanger or cooler are sealed for a period of between 0.5 and 3 minutes and the temp. rise of the water retained in the tube is then measured. The tubes (10) are sealed at one end by plugs (13) which have hemispherical heads (6) and conical bodies (15). The plugs are pulled into their sealing positions by wires (17) attached to the tips of the cones and then passed through the tubes. The plugs are withdrawn by a second group of wires (9) attached to the plug heads. USE/ADVANTAGE - A method of checking the efficiency of the heat transfer of a heat exchanger.
