In purifying waste gases from large-scale combustion plants and refuse incinerators and classifying the impurities present, the flue as is passed downwards through cooling cells with continually decreasing temps. The jumps of temp. depend on the dew point of each impurity. The heat energy recovered from the waste gas is used for generating steam or hot water, whilst the cold purified gas is used for internal or external cooling procedures. The gps. of impurities sepd. are freeze dried in tert. cycles and transferred, pref. through chutes, to pressure-resistant and gas-tight vessels. O2 may be added to promote oxidn., whilst O3 may be produced by UV irradiation of the gas in a warm zone (over 30 deg.C). The dwell of the gas in each cell is controlled by ventilators, which pref. are regulated with thermostatic, velocity gauges and/or impurity sensors. USE/ADVANTAGE - All gps. of impurities can be sepd. and preclassified for economical recycling, without creating new waste problems, and the vol. of waste for disposal is minimised. CO, SOx, NOx, CO2, hydrocarbons etc. can be (partly) removed by cooling ca. 50 deg.C, whilst cooling below 0 deg. C separates all heavy metals and water vapour. The plant can be located near towns, so that the heat energy generated can be used in industry, whilst the installation of additional catalysts as de-NOx components and expensive chimneys are unnecessary.
