Measuring motor vehicles involves using at least one measurement point (P) forming contrast under illumination on the measurement region of the vehicle. An auxiliary coordinate system is displaced parallel to a base coordinate system to determine the measurement point's position in the base system. The measurement point's angular position is determined from two base system points (G1, G2) using a light beam emanating from the base system's null position and by determining the angular positon of the light beam in two planes of the auxiliary coordinate system. Its coordinates are derived from the base points' coordinates and its angular position w.r.t. the base points in the auxiliary system. USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. for detecting effect of crash investigations. Coordinates of each measurement point are detected contactlessly. Very high accuracy and reliability measurements are achieved with considerable time reductions.
