Optimising the quality of a laser beam process, esp. during cutting ceramics, includes measuring the intensity of a UV- and UR plasma jet, determining the mean plasma jet intensity, and comparing the intensity with a threshold value. The threshold value of the mean plasma jet intensity is increased and the intensity of the plasma jet on the surface of the material to be washed is measured. The penetration of the laser beam through the material is determined, and the intensity of the plasma jet when the laser beam penetrates, is used as the threshold value. ADVANTAGE - The process is simple and ensures optimum quality.
