The gear is machined complete with teeth and a pattern of slots (16) in the area between the rim and hub. The slots consist of alternate inner and outer circumferential segments joined by radial segments (22). The bridges (24) left between the ends of adjacent slots prevent the slots from becoming continuous, thereby separating rim and hub. After machining the slot is filled with a suitable plastics or rubber damping material which is allowed to become fully cured. Finally the bridges (24) are drilled out, leaving the hub and rim connected only by damping material. ADVANTAGE - Gear can be machined accurately concentric and will transmit a high torque.
