Using scrap to produce steel - with converter off-gas passing to firing chamber generally used for off-gases from pig iron@-producing cupola furnace

Method of making steel using scrap as part of the charge to an oxygen blown converter (1) and a cupola furnace (4) making pig iron consists of feeding the low pressure burnt CO-rich gas formed in the converter to the firing chamber (5) generally used to fire off-gas from the cupola furnace. Pref. the CO-rich gas is fed to the firing chamber (5) at a uniform rate controlled by a gas storage unit (8). The converter gas is water cooled before being passed through a gravitation and/or centrifugal coarse particle precipitator (3). Converter gas can be fed directly or indirectly to the gas cleaning plant (7) depending on CO content when the CO content is low or zero, the gas passes directly to the plant (7) via a storage control (9). ADVANTAGE - Any type of steel scrap can be used in a low energy, low plant cost process with strict adherence to environmental gas emission laws. Avoids the expensive electro-arc method as means of converting scrap to steel.
