To prepare the ends of woven materials to be seamed together to form a continuous fabric, e.g, for water extn. and drying blankets in papermaking machines etc. the ends are converted to fringes to be joined by a needle loom system. Fringing roller with grippers running along at least one mantle line at an angle to the roller axis, is between the yarn separator and the collected store to be formed, above or below the material. They are moved, in cycled steps, towards the warps where the rear leg of the separator is behind the row of wefts, so that the final weft of the weft rows at each end of the material can be caught by the head of the separator and drawn out of the woven structure. It is caught by the grippers of the fringing roller to be carried out of the woven structure across the whole material width along the weft line. ADVANTAGE - Operation extracts the wefts mechanically, to give fringed ends, without time-consuming manual prepn. work.
