The controller has a facsimile reproduction appts. (FAX) connected preferentially to a subscriber line (AL). An answering machine (AB) incorporates a loop current detector circuit (S1). When the loop is closed the facsimile appts. is held with voltage reversed while an incoming signal is monitored. If the facsimile calling signal is not detected within a predetermined lapse of time after engagement of the subscriber line, a recorded message is reproduced from a text memory (SP) for the caller.
