An increased amt. of pile yarns are inserted into the ground material in the zones where greater mechanical wear is anticipated than in the other sections. The pref. amt. of pile yarn to be used is controlled by the gap between burls inserted laterally and/or longitudinally and/or through the burl height. The pile yarns vol. is increased in the carpeting where it is trodden and reduced in areas which are decorative. No pile yarn is used in carpet sections which are invisible. At the decorative and invisible zones, the burls are so low that they are not cut by the tufting machine blade. A weaker pile yarn is used in the decorative or invisible areas. Pile yarns of different quality are fed to the tufting machine needles. The ground material is fed through the tufting machine, in steps, at different speeds. Those areas of the carpeting which are only used to centre and align the material, and later trimmed off, are not tufted. The tufting machine needles are controlled separately. ADVANTAGE - Requires less material, by structuring the use of material at carpet areas subject to the greatest wear.
