A ring spinning or twisting machine has equipment for changing bobbins as a group with sensing devices on individual spinning positions. A fault signal (23) on an individual gripper (7) either stops the doffing procedure or only stops the partic. spinning position which gave rise to the fault signal (23). A fault signal (23) which occurs after removal of the full bobbins (11) from the spindles (4) or after placing them on a transport device (9) stops the doffing procedure. A fault signal which occurs after removal of the empty tubes (12) from the pegs (10) of the transport device (9) or after placing them on the spindles (4) only stops the appropriate spindle. A bobbin changing device (5) removes full bobbins (11) from the spindles, puts them on a transport device (9) and replaces them with empty bobbins (12) taken from pegs (10). Each gripper (7) has a sensor (15) to signal the presence or absence of a full/empty bobbin. The sensors are connected to a controller (16) which is also linked to a light beam sensor (29,30,31) and roving stops. Several stages of fault detection are possible to deal with malfunctions of the gripper mechanisms at various stages of the doffing cycle. USE/ADVANTAGE - The invention reduces the amt. of time during which the whole machine is stopped due to an individual fault.
