Strip, e.g. steel strip, is coated with a metal e.g. Al, in a melt container and is withdrawn upwards between two slot nozzles which are fed with gas from a liquefied gas reservoir. The gas, pref. liquid N2, is vaporised in an evaporator pipe arrangement by ambient heat. The temp. of the airflowing gas is at least 50 deg.C below ambient, pref. -140 to -180 deg.C. ADVANTAGE - Accelerated and flexible cooling stage.
