The method of contactless process monitoring of machine tools, esp. with automatically interchangeable tools, involves monitoring the forces (13) arising during processing of a workpiece as a measure of the process parameter or parameters being monitored. When a threshold is exceeded, a signal is generated. A body (7) is clamped under tension between adjacent parts or in a bore in the machine so that its geometric shape changes, caused by the workpiece processing and the tensioning forces, can be measured.
