This transition gap between old and renewed brickwork in the walls of an industrial furnace, in particular the heating walls of a coke-oven battery, is formed as a continuous slip joint. The gap (10) has, at least at one outer wall side, a U-form or a V-form or a similar edge prepartion of the bricks (1,3), and this can be closed with normal mortar and/or gastight with ceramic welding. Variants are claimed for the form of the edge preparation, and for the method of carrying out the work. USE/ADVANTAGE - A new form of transition gap, with a method of making it so as to produce better brickwork, is proposed in which, during operation of the plant, costly preparation of the gap for ceramic welding can be avoided.
