The method involves measuring the weight and vol. of the raw material and comparing with a standard density to determine the soil and/or rock content. The equation used is: M% = (ML - (VL . DSt)) . 100/ML, where ML is the wt. of raw material, e.g. the total wt. of a vehicle minus the empty wt., VL is the vol. of raw material and DSt is the standard bulk density. A laser beam (8) is pref. scanned across the surface of the material to determine its volume. USE/ADVANTAGE - Enables the soil and/or rock content to be determined in a agricultural product raw material, esp. sugar beet, whilst on a transport vehicle.
