The deformable mirror allows the beam geometry and/or the cross-sectional wavefront of the high energy laser beam to be adjusted. It comprises a deformable mirror plate (13) across the front of a housing (12) containing a number of pre-assembled translators (19) coupled to respective pins (18) provided at the rear of the mirror plate (13). Pref. the mirror plate (13) is provided by the base of a pot (14) with a peripheral wall (16) which axially abuts the mirror housing (12) and which is clamped against the latter via an outer ring (38) with a radial lip (39) engaging the outer edge (15) of the mirror plate (13). ADVANTAGE - Simple assembly and dismounting with effective hermetic seal between mirror surface and mirror housing.
