Vinyl polymer contg. phenol ester gp.-contg. monomer and comonomer - for epoxy resin crosslinkers and adhesion promoters for metal and for graft polymers

A vinyl polymer comprises (i) 0.5-10 mol. % vinyl monomers of formula (I); and (ii) 99.5-90 mol. % other vinyl comonomers. In (I), X = halogen; R1 = H or 1-4C alkyl; R2 = H, halogen, 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy or 6-12C cycloalkyl; and n = 0, 1 or 2. Also claimed is a process comprising preparing the above vinyl polymer and a hydrolysing to give vinyl polymer contg. units of formula (II). USE - The polymers can be used after hydrolysis as epoxy resin crosslinkers and adhesion promoters for metals and in the prepn. of photoresists. They can also be used as graft backbone for the prepn. of polymers grafted with polycarbonate or polyesters for use as modifiers for polycarbonates for improving benzene resistance,
