Cable is transferred from one drum (3) to another (2) under the control of a programmable controller (14). Each drum is driven by a motor (4,7) via a belt drive (5,8). The torques generated by one motor (7) is controlled to maintain a constant tension in the cable. Sensors (11,13) of an opto-electrical type are used to monitor the radius of the down winding and one of the drives (4) is controlled to maintain a constant speed white the other is torque controlled. USE/ADVANTAGE - Maintains constant tension. Can be used with optical cable.
