Heating vehicle exhaust catalyser - using burner in exhaust line providing heated gases even on cold starting

The catalyser (15) fitted to a vehicle exhaust (20) has a heater which uses the same fuel as the vehicle engine. The heat derived from the burner (16) is passed through a heat exchanger (19) in the exhaust line located before the catalyser. Until the engine is started heated exhaust gas passes through the exhaust line to the air inlet manifold of the engine. The heat exchanger provides a catalytic burning of the engine exhaust gases and/or the hot gases from the burner. USE/ADVANTAGE - Heated exhaust gases are fed to vehicle exhaust catalyser even with random cold starting.
