The procedure relates to the control and/or regulating of an electrically heated catalyser for the treatment of exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine, whereby the catalyser during starting of the engine is deactivated or not activated if the catalyser temperature during engine starting exceeds a critical temperature, whereby the temperature of the catalyser is assessed by a temperature model. The temperature model records the catalyser temperature during engine starting in dependence upon the shutdown duration. An Independent claim is included for an exhaust gas treatment system for an internal combustion engine.
