The transmission (2), inserted between a diesel engine and the axle drive (8), has a planetary gearing (9), with at least 4 shafts, at least 2 sets of planetary wheels (13, 14), 2 sun wheels (10, 12) and input and output shafts (6, 7). A pair of hydrostatic machines (3, 4), selectively operated as a pump, or a motor is associated with respective shafts of the planetary gearing. One of the hydrostatic machines (4) is switched from the output shaft (7) to the non-driven sun wheel (12), upon switching the function of the other hydrostatic machine (3), via a switched coupling (WSK). The shaft (11) of the non-driven sun wheel (12) is coupled to the rotor (38) of a hydrodynamic retarder (36) of relatively small weight and size. USE/ADVANTAGE - For commercial vehicle, e.g. omnibus with reduced retarder weight and size.
