The magnetic bar feed system is applied to automatic lathes machining steel bar (16) which at the end of the machining cycle must be fed out from the chuck (12,14) by a measured distance in readiness for the next cycle. Tools held in the stations of a tool turret (18) are successively traversed past the work to produce the desired workpiece form. A permanent magnet end stop (22) held in one of the tool turret stations is moved into abutment with the end face of the bar (16) protruding from the chuck. USE/ADVANTAGE - Magnetic bar feed system is fitted to existing automatic turret lathes and facilitates full automatic cycling. Surface of bar is undamaged.
