Mixts. of cationic sulphobetaines of formula (I) and sulphobetaines of formula (II) are new. Where, R1 and R2 = H, 1-4C alkyl, or oxyalkylene gps. with 1-20 ethylene oxide and/or propylene oxide units; R3 = H, 1-20C alkyl or alkylcarbamoylmethyl; X = an anion. An allylammonium salt of formula (II) is reacted with 0.4-0.8 molar equivs. of a metal bisulphate (esp. NaHSO3) in an aq. medium at pH 5-10 under oxidising conditions, pref. provided by aeration or by adding a peroxydisulphate. USE - The mixts. are useful as surfactants and corrosion inhibitors (claimed) and as intermediates and microemulsion hydrotropes.
