Pretreatment of annealed steel billets - where stationary hot billets are given controlled surface cooling by pressure water in a closed cooling chamber

The billet is cooled to give a defined surface layer which is significantly cooler than the billet core, whereby the hot core is compressed through the shrinkage of the surface layer. The steel billet (10) is conveyed into a pressure cooling chamber (9), the chamber is closed and the stationary billet is cooled by pressure water. Process equipment is also claimed. ADVANTAGE - Provides rapid controlled cooling of the billet surface to homogenise the steel macrostructure prior to rolling. A redn. in water consumption and better control over cooling compared to continuous operation is obtd.
