The speed command for a road vehicle is provided by a foot pedal coupled to a piston element (13) that is subjected to a return force provided by a number of springs (9, 11, 22). The two larger diameter springs react against a cylinder (7) with a tapered surface that locates within a projection from the main piston rod (13). In operation, the displacement versus force characteristic is linear until the piston end (17) engages a base unit (21) and the third spring (22) contributes a force. This provides the sudden transient effect required for 'kick down' in an automatic transmission system. ADVANTAGE - Provides accurate force hysteresis.
