To combat house dust mites, bacteria and the like when using a vacuum cleaner, a vol. of drying air (T;T1,T2) is mixed with the suction air stream (S) passing over the dust filter (6,11). A heated vol. of drying air (T:T1,T2) is mixed together with the suction air stream (S), pref. during operation, continuously or at intervals, and pref. at continuous periods of 6-10 mins. The drying air (T;T1,T2) to be mixed with the suction air stream (S) is heated air diverted from the suction fan (8) and/or from outside the vacuum cleaner (1), to be mixed with the fresh air (T1) drawn into the fan circuit. The drying air can also be taken from the heat of the suction fan (8) motor and/or from a separate hot air source. The mixed drying air (T;T1,T2) is heated to 60-70 deg.C., to be mixed with the suction air stream (S) through the dust filter bag (6). The drying air feed is switched on and off manually and/or by temp. control. USE/ADVANTAGE - The system is to act against mites and pollen and bacteria and the like, collected by the vacuum cleaner, to reduce the allergic effect on the user and occupants. The action reduces the moisture content of the filter so that it is a less effective breeding ground and also reduces the smell from a disconnected appliance.
