Articles, such as reels of wire, are stored on shelves mounted one above another and arranged in rows with gangways between the rows. The articles are placed on and removed from the shelves by means of a machine which runs on rails along the gangways. The machine has a frame (3) which has an upright (4) at each end. The uprights are connected to each other at their upper ends by a head member (5). The head (5) supports gripping devices (23,24) can be moved horizontally along rails fixed to the head. The head member can be moved vertically up or down to reach a particular shelf. USE/ADVANTAGE - Placing articles on shelves and removing the articles when required. The machine can also receive wire unwound from a reel.
