The instrument has a pulse transceiver and an analyser comprising a pulse transit time measuring circuit and a store to determine the distance between the transceiver and the pulse reflection surface from the pulse transit times. A multiple echo detection circuit compares a set point with the received echo pulses and transmits the transmit time between two echo pulses to the store. If multiple echo pulses are present an AND element activates a switch to connect the store to the analyser so that the distance between transceiver and reflection surface is derived from the stored time between two multiple echo pulses. USE/ADVANTAGE - Level measurement in containers, storage areas, open channels etc. Improved accuracy at very small distances between pulse transceiver and reflection surfaces.
