Two thermoplastic components (4,5) are welded by an ultrasonic welding tool (1) which moves relative to the components. The tool tip (3) penetrates the components (4,5). The molten material which is displaced can be guided round the tip (3) to form the seam, esp. in a way so as to fill the groove behind the tip (3). Stationary components (4,5) are welded by a tool (1), which moves in the direction of the arrow (6) and is vibrated ultrasonically so that the material softens. The tool tip (3) penetrates both components (4,5) and has a step (8) in line with the top surface (9) of the upper component (4). A forward facing taper (14) pushes the displaced material into a channel within the tool tip (3) and guides it to the rear of the tip to fill the groove left by the tool. USE/ADVANTAGE - Allows thick walled components to be welded ultrasonically with simple equipment.
