Pure melamine isocyanurate prepn. - from melamine and isocyanuric acid in purified water, used as polymer flame retardant and white lubricant

Prepn. of melamine isocyanurate (I) comprises reacting equimolar amts. of melamine and isocyanuric acid in aq. suspension at 80-100 deg.C under atmos. pressure with a reaction time of at least 0.5 hour. The novelty is that reaction is carried out in deionised watr free of other organic materials. The obtd. suspension is worked up conventionally. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) is a flame retardant for polyamides, epoxy resins, polyurethanes and polyolefins. It is also a white lubricant for applications in which known lubricants (e.g., graphite or MoS2) have an unacceptably dark colour (e.g., in textile machines).
