Computerised X-ray tomograph with fantail beam scanning - and has rotating source and detector array giving optimal positional resolution and contrast for preset exposure time
A third generation computerised X-ray tomograph has a source (2) which moves with constant angular velocity in a circular locus (1) about the axis (8) and whose radiation is focused to generate a fantail beam (8). A similarly moving curved detector array (4) is divided into elements (7) which enable the data from objects in an area (5) to be examined in groups. The data acquisition system is time referenced by the polar parameters (phi, psi) such that signals are simultaneously integrated within each element (7) and their respective resultants presented for visual imaging in a time sequence matched to the angular velocity of scanning. USE/ADVANTAGE - Enables optimisation of image quality in terms of positional resolution and contrast for any given exposure time. Efficient scanning of object provides data tractable to recent developments in numerical analysis and sampling for image enhancement. Provides alternative to, or support for, spring-focus techniques.
