One or more electrically conducting films (2) are applied to the structure (1). The films are divided by the formation of cracks (5) in the monitored material so that the electrical resistance between their ends increases. A number of films can be applied to the structure in a row so that the depth or width of the crack can be determined from the number of damaged film strips. ADVANTAGE - Can be applied retrospectively to structures with no monitoring installed.
