The camshaft (10) is offset w.r.t. its sprocket wheel (13) with the aid of a pressure operated coupling element (14) between the latter and the main body (11), which has inclined teeth similar to those on the coupling element and sprocket wheel. The necessary pressure is supplied by an inner toothed wheel pump (28) driven by a reluctance motor (36) whose speed is adjusted to give the desired position or speed of movement of the coupling element against a compression spring (26). ADVANTAGE - Very compact and simple mechanism can be installed without difficulty in engine compartment.
