Described is a device for automatically assembling, without welding, one- to three-dimensional chain-like structures made up of chain elements and joint elements which each have at least one opening plus locks and baffle elements designed to prevent the chain structure from coming open by accident. They are designed so that at least two joint elements can be hung on to a chain element in a movement executed in at least two directions. The device has the following features: it has two gripper units (4, 10), the first (4) of which is designed so that it can hold at least one joint element in such a way that its opening is freely accessible. The second gripper unit (10) is designed so that it can hold the chain element in such a way that it is located approximately in a plane in which it can be inserted into the joint element; in order to produce the jointing movement, the first gripper unit (4) can be rotated through an angle +/- alpha about an axis lying in the chain-element insertion plane and making an angle of 90 DEG with the plane of the unjointed chain element, and the second gripper unit (10) can be advanced towards the first gripper unit (4); a rotating device (15) enables a chain element to be rotated in the second gripper unit (10) through at least 180 DEG about an axis lying in the plane of the chain element and making an angle of approximately 90 DEG with the direction of advance of the second gripper unit (10).
