There is a gap (10) between the plug (7) and mounting (6), bridged above and below the bore (8) by a guide ring (11) of hard sealing material. In addition, on both the inlet and outlet side of the plug there are sealing strips each side of the bore of the same material at right angles to the rings, and also bridging the gap. The rings and strips can fit in grooves in the plug or mounting. Both the rings and strips are made of engineering ceramics, metal, graphite or reinforced graphite. ADVANTAGE - Reliability, good sealing, and requires little effort to operate, being particularly for high rates of flow and where the fluid is turbulent and laden with solids.
