Granular materials are treated within a fluid bed reactor incorporating an elongated reactor chamber whose inner base protects the jets from blockages. The novelty is that individual jet (34) outlets are positioned at varying distances (32) from the surface (13) or given level on the base (6), in contrast with the jets (7) which are in the vicinity of the base (6) horizontal area (14). USE/ADVANTAGE - The arrangement is for the base of a fluid bed reactor used in the gasification or combustion of granular materials. The arrangement prevents the blockage of jets and maintain a uniform distribution of gas across the base. Further, the base is low-cost and reliable in operation.
