The monitoring system uses traffic warning signs spaced along the traffic route, supplied with entered or sensor information relating to actual traffic or road conditions, and controlled simultaneously, or in succession, to provide a real-time warning for the drivers of approaching vehicles. Traffic or loading detection circuits extend across the road at spaced measuring points, coupled to an evaluation and control circuit for at least 2 spaced warning signs (35,35') using light display elements operated at a variable light pulse duration, pulse frequency and/or pulse ratio.
