The instrument has a rigid hollow shaft (1) with a flexible distal end section formed by a series of hollow cylindrical pivot segments and a hollow cylindrical end segment. The mantles of each of these segments and the adjacent shaft end have aligned bores for receiving a tension cable (17) used to control the pivoting of the distal end section via a cable reel (18) at the proximal end of the shaft (1). The distal shaft end has four symmetrical noses filtering into corresponding notches in the adjacent pivot segment which in turn has noses fitting into notches of the next pivot segment, providing pivot couplings with two parallel pivot axes.
