Castable aluminium titanate ceramic useful for automobiles - has crystalline aluminium titanate and crystalline rare earth titanate phase

An aluminium titanate ceramic has the following constituents: a crystalline Al titanate phase and a crystalline rare earth titanate phase represented by RE2Ti2O7 (RE is Y, Yb, Er, Dy, Ho, Tm or Lu). A process is claimed for the mfr. of the above, namely: (1) preparing a number of powdered starting materials with a mean particle dia. of 5 microns or less, selected from a group comprising a source of Al2O3, TiO2, FeO3 and a MgO source, a rare earth source, a mullite source, and Al titanate; (2) mixing the above starting materials; (3) forming into a shaped body; (4) drying and sintering the shaped body. USE/ADVANTAGE - The material is used in automobiles, e.g. in head port liners and exhaust manifold liners, and in catalytic converters. The material is easily castable and has good resistance to thermal cycling.
