In a reactor for reacting gases with material in a bed, the bed material is formed within a housing as a deep-bed of permeable bulk-poured or stacked layer material. The bed material between the inlet and outlet planes is subjected to a pressurised flow of damp gas, and the flow area of the bed (1) increases in a direction from the inlet plane (A1) to the outlet plane (A2), with the bed being either fixed or gas-fluidised. USE/ADVANTAGE - Reactor bed for gas contacting, eliminating the drying-out of bed material e.g. biologically active substrates, by preventing initial excessive moisture removal from the moist gas stream in an expanding flow path which acts to reduce condensation, and allow conditioning of the full bed length.
