Porous clay inclusion cpd. - comprises layers of laminar clay, inorganic supports and hydrogen ions in the pores formed by the supports, used as acid catalyst for cracking hydrocarbon(s)
Porous clay inclusion cpd. (I) has a series of layers of a laminar clay (II), inorg. supports (III) between the layers, which form pores and surface sections, and H ions, fixed in the pores and to the surface sections. (II) is a phyllosilicate with ion exchange properties, pref. montmorillonite, beidellite, hectorite, saponite, nontronite, vermiculite and/or artificial fluorinated mica. (III) consist of an inorg. oxide, i.e. Al2O3, ZrO2, Cr2O3, Bi2O3, SiO2, TiO2 and/or Fe2O3. (I) is produced by (a) mixing (II), having cations between the layers, with a soln. contg. (III) precursor ions (IIIA) to replace pt. of the cations with (IIIA); (b) heat treatment of the ion exchanged (II) at 100-900deg.C to produce a porous clay inclusion cpd. (IV); (c) mixing (IV) with an aq. soln. of an ammonium salt (V) to exchange any remaining cations with ammonium ions; and (d) heating the treated (IV) at 200-900 deg.C to desorb NH3 and absorb H ions in the pores and surface sections. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) is claimed for use as hydrocarbon cracking catalyst. It is also useful in absorbents, air purifiers etc. The H ions give high catalytic activity, whilst the uniform pore structure gives shape selectivity properties.
