A number of holders for receiving articles are provided beneath the article conveyor for forming piles of articles. An electrically-controlled pneumatic separator (138) selectively forms a gap in the article flow. Electrically controlled pneumatic deflecting devices (140) are provided between the pile holders for selectively controlling the path of the articles to the holders. Operation of the separator and deflectors are supervised by a controller. The controller receives signals from an article counter, proximity switch, and speed sensor for synchronisation of the controller with the conveyor. USE/ADVANTAGE - Eg for books, newspapers, periodicals brochures, allows for processing of differently sized articles.
