An intermittent motion mechanism moves a backstop along an arcuate path from a position out of a movement path to a position in the movement path so that the backstop sequentially engages a leading edge portion of a sheet material article moving along the movement path. An Independent claim is also included for a method for registering a sheet material article in a sheet material article handler.
