The appts. has two rollers (1,2), axially parallel to each other, with an applicator (5,6) at each roller mantle to transfer the medium to the paper web (4) passing through the roller gap (3). At least one side of the paper web (4) is in contact with a smoothing unit (10a) in its free path (9) after leaving the roller gap (3). USE/ADVANTAGE - The assembly is used to coat a paper web, such as with an emulsion glue to penetrate the paper wholly or partially, or a pigment suspension to clad the paper surface. The appts. gives an even coating to the paper material, and avoids irregular applications which give orange peel effects. Of the applicators (5,6) for the medium, at the roller (1,2) mantles, one (5) delivers a colour and the other (6) a glue, and the smoother (10a) is at the side of the paper coated with the colour. Smoothers (10a) can be located on both sides of the paper web (4), on a common vertical plane at the tangents to the web (4) and displaced from each other. The smoothers (10a) are rotary bodies with rotational symmetry, rotating at a different speed from the web (4), and rotating against the direction of web travel. The smoothers (10a) can also be rods with convex side working surfaces. The smoothers (10a) have smooth or profiled working surfaces. The smoothers (10a) are separately oscillated around their axes, or across and/or along the paper web line.
