Antigens extracted from mammalian malpighian epithelia, particularly the ÷sophageal epithelium of rats or the human epidermis, and specifically recognized by autoantibodies present in patients surffering from rhumatoid polyarthritis, at the location of antigenic determinants shared by human filaggrine and profilaggrine; antigenic proteins making up said antigens; and peptide fragments derived therefrom. Said antigens, proteins and peptide fragments and said human filaggrine and profilaggrine may be used in the preparation of antigenic compositions intended particularly for the diagnosis of rhumatoid polyarthritis. The preparation of antibodies to said antigens, and uses thereof, are also described.
