The present invention relates to a variable optical attenuator comprising two optical fibres 40, 50, one respective end 42, 52 of which is treated by quite a coarse controlled polishing and then by immersing in a solution of concentrated hydrofluoric acid, in order to prevent any Fresnel reflection, two support elements 20, 30 which are capable of controlled relative movement and are suitable for receiving and supporting the said fibres 40, 50 respectively, in such a way that the treated ends 42, 52 of these are placed facing each other, with their axes 23, 33 parallel, but with an area of overlap which can be varied as a function of the relative position of the support elements 20, 30.
