Two rotors (10,20) are fixed to opposite ends (1,2) of a torsion shaft (3). The rotors (1,2) which have adjacent opposing peripheral teeth (12,22) are made from ferromagnetic material and the torsion shaft is made from a non- magnetic material. An external magnetic circuit (30), energised by a winding (34), is completed by the two sets of adjacent rotor teeth (12,22). When a torque is applied to the torsion shaft (3), there is an angular deflection between either end (1,2) and therefore between the adjacent sets of rotor teeth (12) (22). The reluctance of the magnetic circuit is changed and this is detected by a Hall effect sensor (5) in a metering airgap (35). USE/ADVANTAGE - Used as servo control. Eg for marine screw shaft, grinder turbo-alternator. Torquemeter operates independently of shaft speed and can measure torque on shafts at rest or in motion in either direction. Unharmed by torque exceeding elastic limit of torsion shaft and is simple and economic to construct, and can be used for measuring torque of kinematic chain with demounting..
