The instrument consists of a pair of arms (10,11), each of which supports an articulated lever (20). The arms are connected to each other by a slideway (30) via intermediate supports, one (40) of which is fixed to the slideway and the other (50) of which is adjustable relative to it. The relative angular positions of the arms and the levers are adjustable, by means of engagement with grooves (12) formed in the arms and catch levers (60) articulated to the intermediate supports. A spring biasses the catches against the grooves. Locating rings (52,53) fitting in grooves (54,55) of the arms secure the slideway assembly against movement longitudinally of the arms. ADVANTAGE - Rapid adjustment and secure locking in position, giving stable spacing over lengthy operating periods.
