A cylindrical workpiece prepared by drawing a sheet-like blank of austenite stainless steel is ironed in the axial direction in one step or in successive first and second steps. When the ironing operation is effected in one step, the wall thickness reduction percent is selected within a range of 35-45%. When the workpiece 42 is ironed in the two steps, the first step is effected with the wall thickness reduction percent not exceeding 35%, while the second step is effected with the wall thickness reduction percent selected within a range of 35-45%.
