PURPOSE:To prevent a starting device from receiving a large load even if a clank shaft is reversed due to failing in starting the engine, by using a cam mechanism such that a clutch drive member is disengaged smoothly from a clutch driven member when a kick pedal is returned. CONSTITUTION:If an engine is not started even though a kick pedal 6 is operated and therefore a reverse torque is effected through a crank shaft 2, the above- mentioned reverse torque is transmitted from a starting clutch 13 to the kick pedal 6 through a starter shaft 4, a driven gear 10 and a kick shaft 5 so that these are all reversed toward their rest positions. Then, a release cam 18 which rotates together with a drive gear 7, engages with a release plate 17 and retracts the latter in the direction remote from the crank shaft 2 together with the starter shaft 4 just before the drive gear 7 abuts against a stopper 9, and therefore, a drive ratchet 11 is disengaged from a driven ratchet 12. Accordingly, the starting device is released from reversing torque, thereby it is possible to prevent the device from receiving a large load.
