PURPOSE:To analyze alkylene oxide bound in anhydrous glucose unit with high accuracy by determining the signal intensity of anhydrous glucose ring carbon and substituent carbon with a 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum. CONSTITUTION:Hydroxy alkyl cellulose as a sample is treated with a cellulose decomposing enzyme and then reduced in viscosity. Heavy water is added thereto to dissolve the sample, which is measured with the 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum. The signal intensity assigned to anhydrous glucose ring carbon and the signal intensity assigned to substituent carbon are found from the spectrum. Those intensity values are substituted in a specific expression to find the mean molecular number (MS) of alkylene oxide bound in anhydrous glucose units and the mean substitution degree (DS) of alkylene oxide to a 2,3,6-hydroxyl group. Thus, the nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum is only measured to find MS and DS easily at the same time with high accuracy.
